For as long as there has been free trade, there have been people vehemently opposed to it. In reality, what free trade organizations do is not exactly what they promised for the future.

On the face of it, free trade looked like a good thing! For countries to be free to trade goods and services without barriers, and to stop the artificial pricing of goods and services through subsidies and taxation, free trade was supposed to allow prices to rise naturally due to supply and demand. It was supposed to open up trading possibilities with countries and help to bring about harmony and reduce conflict and war. In reality, this has not happened. While many advocates of free trade will spout about the benefits to all, scratch the surface and there is a very different picture of free trade emerging, and it’s not pretty.

Free Trade Organizations

Step back and take a look at who exactly advocates that free trade is a good thing and, surprise, surprise, it’s the corporate giants who are busy reaping the rewards whilst plummeting much of the rest of the world into despair. One of the main problems with free trade is that it becomes impossible for the smaller or medium sized businesses to compete with the corporate giants. They get swallowed up and spat out, and many previously successful small business owners find themselves having to work for extremely low wages for these businesses, just to be able to survive.

Campaign Against Free Trade

Fortunately there are many organizations and activists who are actively campaigning against free trade, WTO and FTAA in the hopes of finding a better solution. There have been protests held around the world over the last decade or so, all fighting for justice and the possibility of trading which is truly beneficial to all concerned.
