Free Trade Protest Organization
For as long as the FTAA has been proposed, there have been those who protest against it, in fact, free trade protest organization has really hit the headlines in the last few years.
There have been huge movements to oppose and protest the FTAA during every single stage of its development. In many states around America there has been a coalition of protestors, including senior citizens, environmentalists, labor groups, human rights and peace advocates, along with many ordinary concerned citizens who have protested at the major meetings of the FTAA. These protests are certainly managing to raise the profile of the many who oppose the FTAA, and hopefully bring their concerns to congress and the rest of the people.
Free Trade Protest in Quebec
At the 3rd Summit of the Americas, held in April 2001 in Quebec City, Canada, there was an international meeting for negotiations regarding the proposed FTAA. As many look back on the meeting now, it is perhaps better known for the security needed and the demonstrations by more than 20,000 people, which were to become known as the ‘Quebec City protest’ rather than any progress which was made in negotiations.
Other protests which successfully attracted the attention of the media were held in 2004. A meeting held in Cuba attracted over 1,000 activists from 32 countries, who drew up an action plan aimed at defeating the FTAA. Protests were planned throughout 2004 and into 2005. These were successful in at least the FTAA did not manage to hit the targeted deadline of 2005.
Many of these protests have at least managed to stall the negotiations, which can only be a good thing for the many protestors who are bitterly campaigning against the FTAA. If you are interested in helping these protestors with this extremely worthy cause, they will surely be glad of the extra numbers.
