If you were old enough to remember the times when NAFTA (the North American Free Trade Agreement) was signed into law, you no doubt remember how it was hailed as a breakthrough for modern business. The ability to trade without having to go through a bunch of government red tape at every turn reduced costs all across the board, and ushered in an era where business could make even more money by finding and filling the various needs in the neighboring countries of the North American continent. While there have been down sides, at least a clothing line like Baby Phat can get into the hands of the Canadian market, without encountering bunch of legal issues related to the government’s usual need to dip into everything.

As free trade becomes the normal state of affairs around the world, one has to focus on not drooling at the possibilities it will open up. With the ability to trade openly across every border, what new treasures will be unlocked, that were previously only held by a select few or by only one region? The world is a massive place full of wonderful products, even though most people have only tried a very small number of what is available out there. When you consider the notion that free trade is going to open up borders, this will pretty much ensure a sort of peace.

While all of the goody two shoes types love the idea of peace, rainbows and butterflies, the real way to ensure peace is to keep good, fair trade routes flowing to every corner of the globe. It may not be the nice answer, nor even the most politically correct possibility out there. But at the very least, having good trading partners the world over will keep anyone from feeling left out enough that they would be tempted to do something crazy to a neighbor.

Free trade is one of the main reasons so many companies are now able to take advantage of outsourcing business operations to reduce production expenses. Free trade is promoted by nations because it encourages cooperation among governments and is also a standard in today’s intertwined technological society. If you are a business owner, here are a few top ways you can start taking advantage of free trade to improve your company.

Outsource Production

Depending on the type of company you own, outsourcing may be the perfect option for you. Foreign production is often much less expensive than domestic production, meaning you can pay less to get the same or better results. Many types of businesses utilize outsourcing for such operations as customer service inquiries, product development, and shipping.

Purchasing Power

Another main benefit of free trade agreements is you can purchase the items needed to make your products in foreign nations. Many business owners purchase foreign materials because they are available at lower costs, which means you can either sell your products for less, or keep them at the same price to get more money in your pocket.

Real Estate Opportunities

One last foreign venture many people pursue is commercial property management in other companies. If you have a background in managing properties, you can market your services to corporations that have moved their operations to foreign countries. This is an expanding business which means you could earn a great living.

No matter which opportunity you choose to pursue in a foreign nation, you should first become familiar with all government regulations and legal requirements. Even with free trade, there is much paperwork that must be completed before pursuing business ventures in foreign nations. Additionally, you should learn all you can about the foreign nation’s culture to increase the likelihood of business success there.

One of the healthiest things a country can do is participate in free trade. Free trade, if you aren’t already aware, is when countries can trade goods and services without any predetermined prices. So what this means is that if you are part of a country that grows a lot of rice and there is a neighboring country that wants to get some of that rice, your country can negotiate a price for the rice without any sort of set taxes, fees, or prices. So if the other country wants to pay you two million for your rice or wants to trade you their bean crop, they can do so as long as both parties agree on it.

There is a reason why the wealthiest countries in the world are participants in the free trade market. It is because anything of value should be traded for what it is truly worth to someone else. Look at stock trading: there are millions of stocks traded every day and people set the price for the stocks. If a company is doing well and people want to be a part of that company, they buy stock, and if enough people buy it, then it drives the stock price up. If people no longer want the stock and begin selling off their shares, then the price goes down and the stock is worth less.

This is roughly the true idea of supply and demand. People pay for products based on what people want to pay for the product. But it’s demand that creates that price. A million dollars for a fish is laughable unless this fish is a one of a kind fish and therefore the demand for this fish goes up. Countries should all think about adopting the idea of free trade as it can only help the country that uses it.

Free trade sounds like a great idea. You need something that someone else has, so you buy it. You might keep it, or you might sell it to someone else. Whichever you decide to do, you have the right to choose and do what you want with whatever it was you bought. Because free trade is so powerful and valuable, having the money to buy what you need so you can sell your goods and services to others is vital to a strong economy. It’s also vital to keeping your business afloat. What do you do if you need quick cash?

Provided you have a steady, verifiable job, you can check into payday loans. With one of these kinds of loans, you’re able to get money fast, and there’s no credit check to worry about. There are all sorts of ways to build money for your business, too. You can borrow from friends and family members that support your business and your ideas. Some people don’t have this option, though. Their friends might not have any extra cash, and their family members might be struggling in this tight economy.

Banks aren’t always good places for loans when it comes to businesses engaged in free trade, because they can be very particular about who they loan to. Non-perfect credit, a lack of collateral, and other problems can show up when trying to get your business a bank loan. No matter what option you choose to raise money for your business, don’t give up on it. There are plenty of choices, and free trade is so important that you don’t want to give up on your opportunity to be part of it. A lot of businesses fail, but yours doesn’t have to. When you plan ahead and are careful with what you do financially, you’ll have a lot better chance of seeing success.

We all know that the idea of free trade has been debated in the United States just like it had all over the world. But the history of free trade has been a particularly interesting one in the United States and it really got interesting once a famous president, Abraham Lincoln, came into power. Lincoln called himself a Henry Clay Tariff Whig, and strongly opposed the idea of free trade and even put a 44 percent tariff during the War to help pay for the railroads and the war effort itself.

The tariff and support of the protection and the growth of industrialization became a thing the Republicans would stand behind to make sure they kept free trade out of the American way of life then of course once the Cold War set in then it became about switching the parties and the Republicans were now open for free trade.

The tariff and support of protection to support the growth of infrastructure and industrialization of the nation became a leading tenet of the Republican Party thereafter until the Eisenhower administration and the onset of the Cold War, when the Democratic and Republican parties switched positions. Since World War II the U.S government has become a big force in the idea of reduced tariff barriers and free trade and they have established things like the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade and the World Trade Organization. Since 1970 the government has negotiated trade agreements such as the North American Free Trade Agreement. And they also formed the Dominican Republic-Central America Free Trade Agreement. The fact is that America has become one of the biggest supporters of free trade because not only will it help to promote peace but it will also give the United States a leg up on doing what they need to do to get started in trading with other countries who they themselves have borders around. But free trade will continue to be something that the United States promotes for a long time.

A lot of times you hear the term “free trade” and you wonder just what it means. Well, it means the ability for countries to trade goods and services with each other without government interference. This is a big deal and matters more than you would think. But perhaps it’s not enough to just say it and it’s better to actually talk about it in a real life setting.

Let’s say you ran a business that sold water pumps. You sold to all the major car companies. You’d want to get as much business as you can. The ultimate goal is to have every car using one of your water pumps. The problem is that it isn’t always easy to do. So what if you went to sell to the 10 car makers in the world and 7 of them were open and they heard what you had to say and were willing to buy but the other 3 three said they would purchase but as a condition of doing business you must pay a 43 percent tax on the money? The smart money says you’d do business with the 7 and forget about the 3.

But what if the 3 really wanted to buy those water pumps but couldn’t get past the fact that they have these taxes that their company imposes on them? Chances are you would make them overpay so that you don’t lose any money on the deal. This way you could pay your 43% but they could also help you out so that you are still making the profit you need to.

Looking at it from the reverse side paints a clearer picture. What if you were making the water pumps but anyone who does business with you has to pay a 43% tax? This is a pretty tough sell to these businesses. Why would they go with you? Even if your product is the best, you’d have to sell it so low to make it worth it to others and that’s no way to do business. This is why free trade works.

The idea of free trade has been around forever and one of the places where free trade has been around the most was in the United States. So what is the history of the free trade in the United States? The beginnings started in colonial America and was regulated by the British mercantile system because of the Acts of Trade and Navigation. Before 1760 there were very few people in the States that worked to get free trade. They were aware of the impositions on them and were willing to suffer with it. Another reason they were willing to be quiet about free trade is a lot of the government regulations were not enforced at all. The other reason was that these merchants didn’t want to compete with foreign good.

When the Revolution came around there was nothing about it that had to do with free trade. However it was the American Revolution that opened the door to free trade. When the British Parliament issued the Prohibitory Act which blockaded the colonial ports the American government decided they were economically independent and henceforth there was free trade. It was there for the taking and the Americans took it as an alternative to the harsh penalties the British government heaped on them.

Now all this would be OK then Alexander Hamilton decided that tariffs would be good to help upstart companies. This was opposed but years later Henry Clay would attempt to convince the Whig Party that this was all part of the American System. The opposition from the Democratic Party was a big deal and was one of the major splits between the two parties for the better part of three decades. The Democratic Party favored moderate tariffs used for the government revenue and the Whigs favored higher protective tariffs to protect favored industries. As long as the United States had been around the idea of tariffs was a big issue in the country. It’s clear as long as there are two political parties there will be differing view points on free trade and the idea of tariffs.

We all know that there is free trade in the world, not in all parts but certainly in some. The question is how long has this practice been going on? The fact is that free trade has been around for quite some time. Every country at one time or another has engaged in trade. It’s essential for a nation to not only survive but to prosper. But before it was called free trade it had another name, and that was mercantilism that began in Europe in the 1500′s. Even in the inception of free trade there were those that had their doubts about it.

The economists during that time that believed in it believed trade was the reason why civilizations prospered economically. Adam Smith though that trade was the reason for the flourishing and not just the Egypt and Greece but also China. The Netherlands had seen great growth and it only came after they said goodbye to Spanish involvement and opened up their own free trade lines. Free trade as a whole has always been in direct opposition in one way or another to communist, populist, and protectionist policies.

There have been wars fought over the idea of the trade. Athen and Sparta was one. The China and Great Britain Opium Wars have been fought over the idea of free trade. Many liberals in the United States in particular believed that free trade was one of the key components of peace. John Maynard Keynes believe that free trade was great combined with domestic policies that promoted employment. Basically what Keynes meant was that it was a good idea to have free trade as long as it was being used as a way to promote employment in your own country. Tis way you were giving back to your own people. The fact is that since free trade came about some centuries ago it has been a long standing hot button issue and one that would be certain to continue today as it splits the political parties.

Not everyone believes in the idea of free trade. Certainly most nations are in some sort of free trade agreement but that doesn’t mean that it’s working. There are the detractors and here’s why: the cost and benefits are debated by interest groups as well as governments all the time. Some believe that trade actually hurts the economy since nothing is being bought and others believe that free trade is just a colonialism in disguise.

Now perhaps the most damning arguments that can be made about free trade are the moral arguments. For instance let’s say your country buys garments from Country X and you are happy about this because you get it at a much cheaper price then you would if you made it in your own country. However what is actually happening is Country X is using children and housing them in sweat shops in awful working conditions. Those opposed to free trade say that free trade encourages such practices because there is no set pricing and since it could be traded with anyone it pushes the country to keep their own cost low.

Those in favor of free trade disagree with this theory saying greed is the reason for sweatshops and greed would exist with or without the free market. As long as there is a chance to make profits and profits can be increased or decreased by business practices there will be a want to do unfair and immoral business.

Another kind of group that is usually against free trade is domestic industries that know that if the free trade market opened up that they would have their profits reduced and their market share reduced. Those in favor of free trade are often not those in a position to be selling goods but rather those on the outside looking in. This isn’t to indicate that businesses themselves don’t like the idea of free trade but rather that businesses vary but those on the outside looking in see free trade as a positive thing. Although not everyone.

So we know how much Free Trade has progressed in the United States but do we know how it is viewed in the rest of the world? Do we know what the global state of free trade is? The fact is that it is still very much the hot button issue it has always been. Most countries in the world are a part of the World Trade Organization which limits in tariffs and trade barriers but most countries are also part of the free trade areas which lower the barriers among participating countries. Now most countries do prohibit foreign airlines from taking passengers between two domestic locations and landing rights are generally restricted but the idea of open skies has become more common.

The reason for this is largely due to the threat of military attack. Countries must be careful to let planes that don’t know fly over where they can’t verify the intentions or the contents inside the plane. Most countries feel the same way so it’s not much a concern.

So if most of the world is on board with free trade what is the advantage? There are many different theories as to why free trade is such an important part of the new order of things but the fact is that it can make countries money. First of all it opens up the people they can trade with. But it in a business sense: let’s say you own a business that sells engines and you want to sell to the major car dealers but three of the dealers make you pay a 40 percent tax just to do business with you then you might be inclined(unless you could make it work) to not do business with them, however if there is no sort of personal tax to do business then you would certainly try and sell your goods to them. There are a lot of reasons why free trade works for most countries and opening up to potential customers is a good reason.
